Colt’s “special model 1861” was developed by personnel at Colt in conjunction with Springfield Armory and blended elements of the US M1861 and British M1853. Perhaps the most notable improvement was in the lock, which reconfigured the hammer and bolster, placing the nipple closer to the chamber of the rifle and used a straight vent providing more positive ignition. Production began in 1862, with a couple of other companies joining in producing the model as well. This is a strong example of a Colt made lock, dated 1864, in which year Colt turned out 45,000 of these rifle muskets. The metal is smooth, showing a mix of light and dark gray, with sharp markings: “US / COLTS PT FA MFG Co/ HARTFORD Ct” forward of the hammer and a crisp 1864 date at rear of the lock plate. On the face we see just a narrow line of brown along the shoulder of the hammer. The reverse of the hammer shows some corrosion, pitting and brown. The internal lock parts are very good, with smooth metal and some blue showing on parts, just a touch of raised brown here and there, along with visible factory inspector initials. Please see our photos. For details on these rifle muskets and their influence on Springfield made rifle muskets, see Moller, Vol. 2. [sr][ph:m]
