Quantities of these commercial made snap hook accouterments made their way through the blockade to the Confederacy. They were utilized on cavalry carbine slings, such as those paired with Richmond Arsenal Musketoon’s, imported Enfield’s or pre-war Hall carbines.

This example is all iron construction except, having a brass roller at the top. Very similar to its northern counterpart. With the only difference having a guide-pin follower on the hinged jaw section.

The snap hook is in an excellent state of preservation with most surfaces being bright shiny. The brass roller is a mellow toned color showing a fine seam through the middle. The piece shows very little wear and may have not been issued. Possibly coming from a seized blockade runner cargo and subsequently sold at prize court.

The large loop in the center is marked “JUKES COULSON & Co.”. London Jukes Coulson & Co was a historic 18th- and 19th-century British ironmongery, metal merchant, and export firm. Rooted in operations dating back to 1768, the company supplied and exported trade cutlery, tools, and hardware worldwide, eventually evolving into a modern industrial manufacturing company.
