The most famous, single-shot, percussion firearm used during the Civil War was the Sharps carbine, a .52 caliber, breechloading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. Presented here is a specimen of the New Model 1859 Sharps carbine that saw heavy use and features serial #68579.

Carbine has a 22” long round barrel. The well-worn markings found on top of the barrel are what was once “SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG. CO / HARTFORD, CONN.” in front of the sight and “NEW MODEL 1859” behind the sight. The bore shows scattered pitting with good rifling.

All gunmetal is in fair condition overall with scattered surface pitting and various dings from use; heavier around the receiver. Shows a dark brown tone overall. Patent stamps are present but show same ware as all other markings. Sharps patent stamps appear on the lock plate and left side of receiver. Lawrence patent stamp appears on lock plate but no longer show on the rear, flip-up sight. The priming system is missing a top screw. Serial number stamped unto the upper tang of the receiver. Breechblock operating lever mechanics operate smoothly. Hammer / trigger mechanics remain strong.

Wood is good without any cracks or breaks. Moderate to heavy amount of dings and saddle wear. No inspector’s cartouches visible. Features the iron patchbox in butt; spring is broken.

This is a solid representative specimen of a favorite Civil War carbine.  [jet][ph:L]
