Between 1861 and 1864 over 20,000 percussion model carbines were produced by the Starr Arms Company - a .54 caliber with a barrel length of 21 inches, overall 37.65 inches long.
Barrel has approx. 98% of the original blue finish. “STARR ARMS MFG. YONKERS NY” stamping very strong. Inspector’s initials “H.G.S.” on side of barrel. Rifling strong and bright. One very minor area of pitting near the breech.
Serial number “298” is stamped on breech block and the inside of the hammer. Lever, tang, and receiver, and hammer are all bright and smooth – likely the result of a very careful cleaning at some point. No case coloring remains. Lock plate has traces of blue with nice smooth surface; marking “STARR ARMS CO / YONKERS, NY” is strong.
Walnut fore stock has minor dings, and sharp contoured edges near screw. Rear stock has no cartouches, has typical dings, and otherwise sharp edges with no cracks. No inspector stamp near or on the nice, mellow brass butt plate. A very small pilot hole is noted in the flat top of the cheek rest near the top of the butt plate.
Mechanically perfect, all parts original.
Clean and striking - an excellent candidate for the discerning collector. [cm][ph:L]
