The most famous, single-shot, percussion firearm used during the Civil War was the Sharps carbine, a .52 caliber, breechloading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. Presented here is an example of the New Model 1863 Sharps carbine that was converted to use centerfire cartridges after the Civil War and features serial #C,30718.
Carbine has a 22” long round barrel and a “straight-breech” type lock plate. No barrel address and a worn “NEW MODEL 1863” stamped to rear of sight. Barrel exhibits original blue finish with just the slightest scattered oxidation. All other gunmetal is in matching condition with dark gray color tone.
Patent stamps on right side of receiver show wear; the one on the left side is clear and complete. Serial number stamped onto the receiver tang. Breechblock lever mechanics operate smoothly. Hammer / trigger mechanics are crisp and strong. Bore is clean and bright with good rifling. Breech block is the replacement made to fire centerfire metallic cartridges. The saddle ring bar remains in place on the left side, minus the ring.
All wood is good and original to the gun with nice walnut color and finish. The shoulder stock has an original inspector’s cartouche at the saddle ring bar and the D.F.C. (in a scroll) inspector’s stamp on left side of the shoulder stock done during the conversion.
Most of gun has had a coat of clear finish applied, producing a somewhat shiny appearance; typical of some early collections. And this was recently acquired from just such a collection: the “Old Stone House Museum” in Windsor, NY. [jet][ph:L]
