A package for .44 caliber paper cartridges in displayable condition. “For Remington’s, Colt’s, and Other Revolving Holster Pistol.” This is the pasteboard box that was covered with a pre-printed label and then varnished to make it weatherproof. This specimen has been neatly cut open around the front edge and resealed. The box has proper weight for six rounds but it is unknown what the current contents actually are. Box has a dirty front label with ink smears.
These were made by H.W. Mason of South Coventry, Connecticut who was in business from 1865 to 1888. Mason found a business opportunity in continuing to supply combustible cartridges to people who retained their old “cap and ball” weapons in a time when the arms industry was turning to metallic cartridge guns.
