NICE CONDITION ENFIELD MUZZLE TOMPION

$50.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1142-96

This is one of several types of tompion imported with British arms, the P53 Enfield Rifle musket being the most common, reaching the North and South in the hundreds of thousands. The purpose is the same for all: to seal the barrel against moisture and dirt when not in use. In this case the cork body is compressed by twisting the brass top to expand and tightly fit the barrel. These were commonly issued, though seldom remarked upon by soldiers, though they do show up in the occasional photo of a soldier proudly showing off his new arms and gear for the folks back home.

This would pair nicely with an Enfield or showing the contents of the implement pouch in a soldier’s cartridge box. Exc. condition.  [sr] [ph:m]
