This is an 18 gauge buckshot load manufactured by Eley Brothers in London. It is known as their patented wire cartridge and is definitely of Civil War period. These consisted of a color-coded, cylindrical paper tube containing a wad and a wire “basket” holding the shot. An outer, white paper envelope was intended to protect the cartridge from being broken or damaged when being carried loose in the pocket. A brown cloth tear-strip allowed for easy opening of the round and orange labels on the bottom stated the size and read “Eley / London”.
This specimen shows three very small holes in outer wrap where the wire has rubbed through, otherwise in excellent condition. This is manufactured in the same manner as pistol cartridges that are commonly seen from Eley, with the protective wrapper and cloth tear strip. A quantity of these are known to have been in Confederate arsenal inventories during the war. [jet] [ph:L]
