This is a reloadable, steel shotgun shell. Patented by Sylvester Roper (#53,881) on April 10, 1866.

This is the 16-gauge shell with its recessed head and percussion nipple. Measures 2.4” long. Very good condition.

Sylvester H. Roper invented a revolving shotgun firing from an open bolt using metallic shotshells. About the same time, he was also busy inventing what we could call a steam carriage or automobile, and steam powered bicycle (a motorcycle?). He also invented the screw in shotgun choke, a sewing machine, knitting machine, fire escapes, and machine tools. He worked closely with Christoper M. Spencer in the revolving shotgun, and in Spencer’s 1882 pump shotgun. Roper died in 1896 at age 73 while racing one of his steam motorcycles.  [jet] [ph:jet]
