Manufactured under Poultney's patent (#40,988 dated December 15, 1863) which was originally granted to Thomas Rodman and Silas Crispin who assigned it to Thomas Poultney. The cartridge case is made of brass foil and cartridge paper rolled together to form the tube. The end is closed and has a perforation to allow the percussion cap flame to penetrate.

The lead bullet features a solid base and a single wide groove. This shorter, thicker cartridge is shaped to fit the receiver of the Smith carbine. Cartridge is in excellent condition.
