A Civil War Colt Model 1860 Army revolver in good original condition. In production from 1860 through 1873, these handguns were the successor to the Colt Third Model Dragoon pistols. The Model 1860 Army was the major sidearm in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War with over 127,000 Colt revolvers acquired by the Union government during the conflict.
This revolver is a .44 caliber, three-screw model with a 6-shot rebated cylinder and an 8” long barrel. All matching serial numbers (99749) on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, butt strap, cylinder, cylinder pin, and even on the wedge. Serial number dates the manufacture to early-1862.
Sidearm is equipped with recoil shield cutouts on the frame and the small notch on the base of the butt plate. Mechanics are crisp and strong. Barrel address, “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA” is completely readable. Bore is clear with scattered oxidation and good rifling. Rolled cylinder scene is mostly worn away. Patent date and serial number are visible on the cylinder. The “COLTS / PATENT” mark on the left side is slightly worn. Original nipples are in good condition; safety pins are worn down. Small sub-inspector’s stamps on various parts. Wedge screw shows original blue and likely replaced.
Brass trigger guard has a mellow golden patina. Patina on all gunmetal is a nice mottled plum color. Grips are original one-piece walnut in good condition and with expected wear. Two cartouches are visible, one on each side.
This is a classic, war-time production “Colt Army” revolver in good condition. [jet][ph:L]
