This pleasing martial sidearm is a government contract Model 1836 single-shot flintlock pistol in very good overall condition. The firm of Asa Waters of Millbury, Massachusetts and Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut produced 41,000 such pistols from 1836 through 1844.

This 14” long flintlock pistol is a .54 caliber smoothbore muzzleloader. The 8.5” round barrel with a somewhat crusty bore. Barrel, with its brass blade front sight and an oval shaped rear sight on tang, has no original finish. Barrel has a smooth and bright surface. Breech is clearly stamped “U.S. / JH / P”.

Lockplate slightly convex and flush at the rear with beveled edges forward of the hammer. Maker name on the lockplate is visible but slightly light along top edge of first line “[eaglehead] / A. WATERS / MILLBURY, MS. / 1837”. Visible within the frizzen spring is a sub-inspection stamp “F”. Additional inspection letters are found on various parts of the pistol. Barrel band has a strap extension that joins the side plate. No flint in its jaws. Brass flash pan is detachable and angles upward at the rear. The frizzen spring remains strong and tight. Mechanics strong and crisp. Small trigger. Round butt cap displays a long narrow tang that forms the rear strap of the grip. Pistol has a steel swivel-type button-head ramrod.

A beautiful, dark black walnut stock exhibits a pleasing patina and features two good inspector’s cartouches on the flat opposite the hammer. Stock shows only the usual and expected small dings from age and use.

This was recently acquired from a small collection: the “Old Stone House Museum” in Windsor, NY.  This single-shot, martial-marked M1836 flintlock pistol by Asa Waters is a fine specimen.   [jet][ph:L]
