A cap and ball percussion sidearm, this specimen is a Civil War Colt Model 1860 Army revolver in good original condition. In production from 1860 through 1873, these handguns were the successor to the Colt Third Model Dragoon pistols. The Model 1860 Army was the major sidearm in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War with over 127,000 Colt revolvers acquired by the Union government during the conflict.
This revolver is a .44 caliber, three-screw model with a 6-shot rebated cylinder and an 8” long barrel. All matching serial numbers (121818) on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, butt strap, and cylinder. Wedge is unnumbered. Serial number dates the manufacture to 1863. Sidearm is equipped with recoil shield cutouts on the frame and the small notch on the base of the butt plate. Mechanics are crisp and strong. Barrel address, “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA” is strong. Rolled cylinder scene is all but gone. Patent date and serial number are visible. The “COLTS / PATENT” mark on the left side is also strong. Original nipples are in good condition; safety pins are worn down. Brass trigger guard has a mellow golden patina. Patina on gunmetal has an overall semi-bright pewter tone. Grips are original one-piece walnut in good condition with both cartouches remaining visible. “Co. A” and possibly some initials carved into the butt.
The revolver is in a black leather holster. The holster “pocket” measures about 10.5” along its front edge. Holster is made from two pieces of black bridle leather; the flap being stitched to the body. There remains evidence of where the closure tab was sewn to the underside of the flap, but tab is now missing. Holster has a wide belt loop on the reverse that measures 3” wide along the top and is stitched and riveted in place. Holster body does not have its leather plug closing the end of the holster. General outline of a revolver is stretched into the leather. The brass finial remains attached to the main body. There are no makers’ marks visible. In overall very good condition, this holster shows use. Leather exhibits light crazing but no loss of the surface finish; stitching remains tight other than two small portions along seam.
This is a classic, wartime production, three-screw Colt Model 1860 Army revolver with military-style flap holster. [jet][ph:L]
