The 5 shot Baby Dragoon was the forerunner to the popular Model 1849 Pocket and was only manufactured for four years. They saw widespread use in the California Gold Rush, on the Western frontier and were certainly still in circulation throughout the Civil War years. This is a good, honest example, and although showing considerable wear to the original finishes and factory markings, has a great smooth surface bespeaking long use rather than a later scrubbing. It has all matching serial numbers; this is "5556" and is marked on the frame, barrel, cylinder, backstrap, trigger guard, wedge, and arbor pin with a worn but readable Colt barrel address and "COLT PATENT" markings on the frame.

The 5-inch barrel is .31 caliber and the rifling is good. There are no traces of the "Texas Ranger and Indian fight" cylinder scene remain but the very worn "5556" serial number can be made out. The metal has a smooth gunmetal gray patina for the most part. And the revolver has been cleaned in recent times but respectfully. The brass grip straps retain 20% silver finish. The original wood grip fits perfect with no chips or cracks and retains 80% of a possible factory varnish. No screws are later replacements. The action is crisp and tight and functions well. All nipples are clean originals. The weapon was made without a loading lever and therefore required breaking down in order to load.

This is an important piece of Colt firearms history that we don't see very often. Between the limited production and hard long use not many of these have survived in any condition!   [pe][ph:L]
