U.S. Model 1836 single-shot martial flintlock pistol, the lock plate stamped forward of the cock with an eagle device above the three-line marking "A. WATERS / MILBURY, MS / 1837." The Model 1836 was the last U.S. martial pistol produced in the flintlock ignition system and was made under contract by Asa Waters of Millbury, Massachusetts, and Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. Pistols marked by Waters are recorded dated 1837 through 1843, and this example carries the first of those dates. It is a full-stocked walnut arm with iron mounts: iron pommel-type butt cap, iron trigger guard, a single iron barrel band, and a sideplate opposite the lock. The lock has an iron cock with jaw screw, retaining a flint, an iron frizzen and a brass flash pan. A swivel ramrod with flared head is carried beneath the barrel, retained by its swivel at the muzzle. The 8 1/2 inch barrel is .54 caliber and rifled, giving an overall length of approximately 14 inches. Mechanically perfect.

MARKINGS: Lock plate: eagle over "A. WATERS / MILBURY, MS / 1837." The stock carries two struck cartouches on the flat of the grip, one circular and one oval, along with additional faint marks at the breech of the barrel.

CONDITION:  The iron has a gray, lightly pitted patina throughout, and the brass pan has a mellow, aged color. The walnut stock is dark with honest handling wear, scattered dings and grain checks, and minor chipping along the lock mortise. The barrel is rifled. The lock is mechanically perfect. A solid, untouched example that retains its original flintlock ignition; a significant quantity of Model 1836 pistols were altered to percussion in the 1850s, and this one was not.
