This is an attractive example of the Colt Open-Top Pocket Revolver, Colt's answer to the popular Smith & Wesson rimfire pocket revolvers of the post-Civil War era. Introduced in 1871, these little seven-shot .22 rimfire revolvers sold well, with more than 100,000 produced through the 1870s. They were inexpensive, reliable, and easily carried, which made them a common companion for travelers, shopkeepers, and townsfolk of the period. They take their name from the absence of a top strap over the cylinder, a feature that harkens back to Colt's earlier percussion designs. This example was manufactured in 1876, the nation's centennial year.

This revolver is fully nickel plated, including the brass frame, and has a spur trigger. It is dressed up with a fine set of mother-of-pearl bird's-head grips, which give it a touch of Victorian elegance. The barrel is marked "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A." Serial number 90951 is stamped on the butt of the frame, and the number also appears on the barrel.  The caliber designation is also stamped on the frame.

Much of the nickel finish remains on the barrel and frame. There is wear and light freckling on the barrel and cylinder, and the brass shows through at the edges of the frame where the plating has worn. The markings remain clear. The pearl grips display a lovely luster. They show light age wear and a few small spots and chips near the butt, as seen in the photos.

The action and mechanics are good, and the cylinder lockup is tight.

A handsome pearl-gripped Colt pocket revolver from the centennial year that would make a fine addition to any Colt or frontier-era collection.   [cm][ph:L]
