A handsome and well-made Belgian pistol from the great gunmaking center of Liège, with the lock signed "Mory" and "Liège" in script. Liège makers produced arms of every grade for markets around the world, and this example shows the quality carving, engraving, and attention to detail found on their better civilian pieces.
Originally made as a flintlock, the pistol was later converted to percussion, a common practice that kept fine arms like this in use after the percussion cap replaced the flint. The conversion was done by cutting away the original priming pan and fitting a newly crafted bolster at the breech, with the original lock plate retained and fitted with a graceful swan-neck percussion hammer. The action is excellent. It operates crisply and includes a sliding safety tab behind the hammer that locks the hammer in place, which also works as it should. The barrel is octagonal at the breech, transitioning to round at a turned ring, and finishes with a turned muzzle. The bore measures approximately .50 caliber, and the rifling is still fairly strong, with the lands and grooves clearly visible at the muzzle.
The walnut stock is nicely figured and carved in relief around the barrel tang, the lock, and the side plate, with raised shell and foliate carving. The iron furniture is equally well done. The barrel tang is engraved with a trophy-of-arms motif, and the engraved side plate retains traces of its original blued finish. The pommel cap is engraved with foliage, and the trigger guard ends in a carved foliate finial. Two turned ramrod pipes hold the wooden ramrod with its horn tip, which is present with the pistol.
Condition: The metal has a pleasing gray patina with light scattered pitting and remains crisp in its engraving. The stock shows light handling marks and minor edge wear consistent with age, including some small chips at the edges of the carving near the trigger guard tang. There is a notable crack surround the lock plate. It begins under the right side of the lock plate, runs diagonally and stops at the rear side plate screw. The pistol is stable but the crack runs through the stock.
Overall length is approximately 12 inches, and the barrel measures approximately 7 inches.
An attractive, mechanically excellent Liège pistol with good rifling, fine carving and engraving, and a signed lock. [cm] [ph:L]
