MODEL 1842 SPRINGFIELD RIFLED MUSKET DATED 1854

$1,750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1038-01

An original Springfield Model 1842 single shot, rifled, .69 caliber musket in good condition. All metal surfaces have a lightly cleaned appearance.

Barrel surface is semi-bright and smooth with light to moderate pitting at the breech. Proof marks of “V / P” over an eagle head are strong. Barrel date is obscured by pitting. Brass blade front sight is mounted on the forward most front barrel band. Long range rear sight with single flip-up leaf is present. Sliding peep sight operate properly. Bayonet lug is present below the muzzle. Bore has light rifling and shows pitting along its length.

The lock surface matches the rest of the iron furniture on the weapon. The markings include a very strong spread winged eagle stamped over an equally good, small, “US” forward of the hammer and a good “SPRING / FIELD / 1854” in a stacked, three-line arrangement back of the hammer. Nipple is original. Mechanics are strong and work properly.

Black walnut stock is in very good untouched condition. Wood is dark but does exhibit several small dings and dents. The flat opposite the lock has one very faint inspector’s cartouche. The wood lines on this musket are still good. Overall, the wood is very pleasing to the eye.

There is a good “US” stamped on the buttplate tang. Butt plate is uncleaned and still shows a nice dark patina. Musket retains its original trumpet head steel ramrod with flat face but the threaded tip is gone. Both sling swivels are present. Trigger guard and barrel bands match the rest of the iron.

Screw heads on the weapon show very little wear.  [ad] [ph:L]
