MINTY MODEL 1861 SPRINGFIELD RIFLE MUSKET, DATED 1862

$4,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1179-095

This Model 1861, .58 caliber, percussion rifle musket is complete, and in excellent condition. Early production by the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts in 1862.

All gun metal on this rifle has matching clean, bright finish. A spread-winged eagle motif is stamped on lockplate between hammer and bolster. Under the bolster is clearly stamped, “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD”.  Behind the hammer is the date, “1862”.

The 40” long barrel has the original blued two-leaf rear sight and small blade front sight. Barrel shows no pitting around the breech and bolster and is lightly stamped “1862” at the top of the breech. Proof marks “V / P / eaglehead” are light on left facet of the breech. Bore is clean and clear with decent rifling. Comes with wood tompion.

Butt plate bears a strong “US”. Mechanics are crisp and strong. Retains its original swelled shank, tulip-head steel ramrod with threaded end. Barrel bands, sling swivels, etc. are all in similar very good condition.

Black walnut stock is also in very good condition. Has clean edge contours. Stock exhibits two very clear inspector cartouches on the flat. There are no cracks and only the expected minor dings and dents from age and storage. Wood retains dark original color and finish.

A very clean, original and early example of a true Springfield-made musket of the Civil War.  [jet] [ph:L]
