PATTERN 1853 ENFIELD RIFLE MUSKET BY POTTS & HUNT

$2,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1000-343

The round barrel is just over 38.5” long. The surface has turned a dark pewter color over much of its surface with only light pitting at the breech. Front blade sight and flip-up, long-range rear leaf sight with sliding bar remain in place. London viewer marks are crisp and clear on the left side of the barrel at breech. A hand carved six-point star design has been cut onto the top of the barrel directly behind the rear sight, which could represent 8th Corps or Jewish association. Bore is bright and clean with strong rifling.

The lockplate is clean with tight fit to the stock. Clearly stamped “POTTS & HUNT / LONDON” in front of the hammer. Hammer and trigger mechanics are strong and crisp. An English “snap cap” is still attached via the sling swivel.

English walnut stock remains in nice condition. There is a very light, oval inspector’s cartouche (script W.R.) on the left flat opposite the lock. Next to that the letters “TC” are stamped. A small nick has an old repair near the butt tang.

All three of the barrel bands are present as are the two sling swivels. Correct ramrod is present with worn threaded tip. Brass nose cap, butt plate, washers, and trigger guard are present and in fine condition.

A British sling is mounted on the rifle with a replaced leather slide.

A very nice London contract Enfield rifle musket.  [jet/ss] [ph:L]
