The London Armoury Company was established in 1856 with the intention of producing military arms for British War Department, as well as export markets. The London Armoury Company (LAC) produced arms have the distinction of the being the only machine-made, fully interchangeable parts "Enfields" to be imported during the American Civil War. The high-quality guns were very desirable for both US and CS purchasers and both sides attempted to arrange to buy as many of these. The majority went to the National army. Today, London Armoury produced P-1853 "Enfields" of any type are very difficult to find, and those with any Civil War provenances or markings are particularly difficult to located.

This British Pattern 1853 Enfield type rifle-musket is dated "1862" on the "LAC" marked lock plate. At the rear of the lock plate is the Queen's crown over "VR". The lock works perfectly. The gun is devoid of any British military inspection or ownership markings and is a typical London made contract gun for commercial sale that was destined for export from Great Britain.  The 39-inch barrel is London proofed it was .577 caliber and has nice brown patination. The 3-barrel bands, have this same patination. Only the rear band is the correct Baddeley band; a unique type used by the London Armoury. There are no sling swivels. The bore of the gun is smooth.   The gun lost its original rear sight a long time ago. However, the original front sight is present. The full-length ramrod is in the channel under the barrel. The patina of the rod matches the gun perfectly. The stock is full-length, solid and free of any breaks or repairs. The stock has a dark brown color. The wood does show some scattered bumps, dings and minor dents and has an ancient coating of varnish which can be easily removed with denatured alcohol. The right butt stock has a round cartouche that reads inside. "LONDON ARMOURY" and "1862". The flat opposite the lock bears an intricate script inspection cartouche within an oval, which appears to read either “LR” or “LB” or "JL" or...?  We do not know who this inspector is and it is Union or Confederate; the knowledgeable former owner of this weapon believed it was a Confederate inspection mark.  London Armoury long rifle-muskets are rarely anymore.
