This Civil War shoulder arm in nice overall condition is called the Colt “Special Model 1861” contract rifle-musket; it was made from 1861 to 1865 by the Colt Manufacturing Co. of Hartford, Connecticut. Records indicate that some 100,000 such muskets were produced during that period; many were supplied for various state sub-contracts. This longarm is a percussion .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader with the standard 40” round barrel held by three screw tightened iron barrel bands. The lock plate markings are standard Colt Special markings: “U. S." over "COLTS’ PT F. A. MFG CO" over "HARTFORD, CT"” in front of the hammer and the “1864” date behind. All markings in this formerly casehardened lock are typically light but also obscured by a mottling caused by rusting; this has been removed leaving a pleasing gun metal surface. There is a spread winged eagle stamped on bolster below the nipple. The barrel markings are clear proof marks “V" over " P" over an eagle head. On the left barrel breech flat is: “M.N.M." and "STEEL”.  A matching date “1864” is deeply stamped on top of the breech.

The original ramrod retaining its threaded tip fits tightly in channel. The rifle-musket exhibits the standard, once blued two-leaf rear sight. There are sling swivels on the trigger guard and the middle band.  All screw heads in good shape. The mechanics are strong and crisp. The bore is clean with good rifling. Various components exhibit sub-inspector marks. The butt plate is stamped with “US”. The black walnut stock is in good original condition with no cracks or breaks but there are a few chips out here and there. The stock shows field service wear but no abuse. The flat pane opposite the lock plate has 2 deeply stamped government inspectors' cartouches.

This is a 100% original Colt Special Model 1861 musket in very good overall condition.  [pe] [ph:L]
