NOSE SECTION OF 3” HOTCHKISS CASE SHOT SHELL – FAIRFIELD ROAD, GETTYSBURG – KEN BREAM COLLECTION

$495.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1163-48

This is the excavated nose portion of a 3” Hotchkiss case shot (filled with lead shrapnel balls) artillery shell in very good “dug” condition. Lead driving band and bottom iron cup are gone.

Iron surface remains very clean with only light surface rust. Retains its brass Hotchkiss percussion. Fuse was never completely screwed into the shell. Fuse has perfect green patina. Lightly coated long ago and has “FAIRFIELD ROAD” in white paint on side. Deactivated and safe.  Case shot balls can be felt rattling around inside.

This is from the Ken Bream collection that was sold at auction in October 2021. Mr. Bream was a 1970 graduate of Gettysburg High School and life-long relic hunter and collector. His parents managed the Stuckey’s Restaurant that was once located at the north-west corner of the Emmitsburg & Wheatfield Roads intersection (opposite the Peach Orchard). In the late 1960s through the early 1970s Ken worked on the Eisenhower Farm as a groundskeeper, maintenance man, and general helper for the Eisenhower’s. For many years, he was the Gettysburg Dog Enforcement Officer.  This was Lot 89.  [jet] [ph:L]
