Full 8 page issue of the GETTYSBURG TRUTH for June 8, 1889 reporting on the Johnstown flood.

Headline at top left reads “FROM JOHNSTOWN – THE NEWS NOT VERY ENCOURAGING – IT WILL TAKE A LONG TIME TO CLEAR AWAY THE DEBRIS – PROPOSITION TO BURN IT UP AFTER 48 HOURS – NO SIGHT SEERS WANTED.”

The last page of the issue has several small woodcut illustrations of the Johnstown area as well as a small map. Headlines on the last page read “DEATH AND DESTRUCTION – THE WORKING FORCES NOW WELL ORGANIZED AND BETTER PROGRESS MAKING – 10,000 MAY BE DEAD – LOSS OF PROPERTY ABOUT 34,000,000.” Another headline reads “DEATH AND RUIN! – DESCRIPTION OF THE FLOODS AWFUL DESTRUCTION ALONG THE CONEMAUGH RIVER – THOUSANDS OF BODIES FOUND.”

Paper has been folded into fours and shows minor wear along the fold lines. There is also some minor edge wear.  [ad] [ph:L]
