View was done by H. E. Weaver of Washington, D.C. and shows the monument to the famous 1st Minnesota Infantry on Cemetery Ridge.
The view is taken from the south side of the monument looking north with the Vermont Brigade Monument and Hancock Ave in the background.
Contrast and clarity are good. Mount has some minor staining in the upper right corner. Paper is excellent.
The reverse has a small paper label with Weaver’s name in the lower left corner and a larger printed and handwritten label at upper right that reads “GETTYSBURG BATTLEFIELD, 1 MINN INF. CENTRE OF BLOODY ANGLE. IT WAS HERE THIS REGT. WAS CUT TO PIECES. IT WENT IN THE FIGHT WITH 262 MEN, AND LOST IN KILLED AND WOUNDED 224. 17 OFFICERS KILLED AND WOUNDED.”
The 1st Minnesota is well known for their heroic charge on the afternoon of July 2, 1863. The numbers on the caption are a bit off. The regiment brought 378 men to the field and suffered 224 casualties.
The monument was erected in 1893. [ad] [PH:L]
