Nine piece grouping of FAHNESTOCK & BROS. commercial documents, all pre-battle, five dating from October 1861, four from April/May 1862.

Located at the corner of Baltimore and Middle St., the Fahnestock House / dry goods store has the distinction of being visited by Union general O.O. Howard, on the morning of July 1, 1863, the opening day of the battle. While observing troop movements from the roof of this structure, at approximately 11-11:30 am, Howard was informed that Gen. John Reynolds had been killed, and that command of Union forces then in action [his own 11th Corps, and Reynold’s 1st Corps], had now devolved in him. During and following the Battle, the Fahnestock House served for numerous federal supply and hospital functions.

One Fahnestock invoice is from the New York City firm of “Alex. T. Stewart & Co./ Broadway, Chambers & Reade Streets”. The others are from various Philadelphia firms— such Wm. H. Horstmann & Sons, A. B. Justice & Co.; M.E. Justice-Confectionary, Fine cake & Steam Biscuit Bakery; Edwin Clinton Brush Manufacturer, etc. etc. Items purchased are typical dry-goods fare of the time, ranging from cakes and biscuits to shoe nails, brushes, cloth & silk. Although some documents are lightly soiled, all are in very good condition and entirely legible.
