GETTYSBURG RECOVERED M1839 OVAL US BELT PLATE

$300.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 490-5817

This plate was recovered here at Gettysburg. The face is predominantly brown with some greenish tones and a bit of gray. The US is very good, and the face shows few dings, but the edge has some shallow ones and a deeper one at upper right. The lead solder fill on the back is in place, showing shallow corrosion, largely gray and light brown in color, with an applied collector’s label “GETTYSBURG.” The belt hook is broken off, likely the reason the plate was lost. The two arrow shaped belt studs are present. These are generally dated 1863-65, but some makers began to replace the oval topped studs with this form in 1862 and by April 1863 Emerson Gaylord, the well-known accoutrement maker, could refer to the stud back (or “puppy paw” to some collectors) as the “old style” waist belt plate.

This is a good example of the regulation U.S. infantry enlisted man’s belt plate from the most famous battle of the war.  [sr] [PH:L]
