Fine 6” x 8” view on a 10” x 12” mat. Shown is Willoughby run at Bream’s Dam, the stream where Union General John Buford established his cavalry defenses on July 1, 1863. CS General James Archer was captured there and has memorable and painful reunion with his old friend General Abner Doubleday at this spot. Circa 1890’s photo with ink caption on reverse: “At Bream’s Dam / near Fairfield Road / 3 miles from Gettysburg. Platinum print”.

Platinum printing is based on the light sensitivity of ferric oxalate. Ferric oxalate is reduced to ferrous oxalate by UV-light. The ferrous oxalate then reacts with platinum or palladium reducing it to elemental platinum (or palladium), which builds up the image.  [ld][ph:L]
