Tourism has been a centerpiece of Gettysburg since the days immediately following the battle.  Throngs of people flocked to see the sights of the iconic clash just as they do today, popularizing areas for generations to come.  Among the most photographed areas was Devil’s Den, partially due to a railway system that brought guests directly to the well-known place.  This group of smartly dressed tourists – likely a family – sits and stands between the massive boulders of the Den on a sunny day in 1920.  The photo is in good condition with only a slight water stain at the upper right corner and top edge.  One small indentation is noted on the left edge of the photo. The reverse is blank and mostly clean. The image is in a small wood frame and the backing board is carved with writing and covered in plastic (assumed for preservation purposes).  The only portion of the carved writing that is legible is “Photo of Devil’s Den Gettysburg 1920”. A few other words are somewhat legible but further deciphering is needed. The photo measures 6.4” x 8.4” while the frame measures 7.8” x 9.7”.

This earlier Gettysburg photograph is likely a William Tipton photo, as the number transferred from the negative matches those of his catalogue.  It is otherwise unmarked.

A striking view from the past of one of Gettysburg’s most famous landmarks.  [cm][ph:L]
