This antique leather photo album belonged to an unnamed family and features 22 images – at least 6 of which are of the Gettysburg battlefield.
The album is covered in a red-brown leather with vertical embossments at the sides and a gold fill embossment at the center of the front cover reading “Photographs”. All photos are mounted to cards with a pasted fabric binding section along the left edges. The binding shows at patent date stamp of “APR. 4. [18]82”. The spine of the album is missing and each photo is unbound (loose) but in good condition. Each card/page hosts two photos (one mounted to the front and one to the back, with the first page hosting two, 3.8” x 4.7” images on one side only) measuring 5” x 7.3”. There is a slight warp to the cards at center, but the condition of the photos is unaffected.
Confirmed Gettysburg photos include General Warren on Little Round Top, The Valley of Death facing Little Round Top, Devil’s Den, East Cemetery Hill toward Culp’s Hill, the East Cemetery Hill Observation/GAR Tower, and the Leister House. 5 other photos are possibly Gettysburg-related but are not readily identifiable (and could have been taken elsewhere). The remainder of the photos show a gathered family, the same family in transit by carriage, the Catskill Mountains, and various sights and buildings of Albany, and Newburgh, New York.
Each card measures 7.6” x 10.1” from the fabric edge to the opposite edge, while the cover measures 7.1” x 10.7”. The album likely dates to the 1880’s given some details in the images.
An interesting relic of a family trip, with a stop at the hallowed Gettysburg Battlefield. [cm][ph:L]
