These cartridges were issued with the Model 1836 and Model 1842 single shot pistols carried by the US Dragoons during the Seminole and Mexican Wars, and to those soldiers who continued to be issued these pistols during the Civil War.
This is a complete .54 caliber cartridge, measuring 1.5” long with both the tie string and the folded tail intact. Cracks in the cartridge paper on one side have been repaired and stabilized.
From Lee’s Headquarters Museum Collection housed in the Widow Thompson house. This was one of the oldest private collections in Gettysburg. First opened in 1925 by Clyde Daley. The museum and property were sold to Eric Larson in 1945 who built a hotel at the back of the property. Throughout the years the museum remained virtually unchanged. In 1995 the Larson’s sold the property and the new owner de-accessed some items to facilitate an extensive renovation of the museum. This is one of those items. More recently the property was acquired by the American Battlefield Trust who restored the building and property to its 1863 appearance. [jet][ph:L]
