Here we have a seriously cool piece of local history that helps us more clearly understand what was really going on post-battle.
These two pages contain reports on the Battle of Gettysburg. Headlines include: The Battle of Gettysburg! A Grand Victory! Glorious News! Vicksburg Captured! Hancock Whips Longstreet, From Harrisburg, The Latest – Retreat of the Rebels in Fragments, among other news pieces.
The first page (the front page of the paper) discusses major happenings at the Battle of Gettysburg such as the movements of the battle and those killed and wounded – including an error regarding the death of General Longstreet, and the Confederate retreat.
The second page contains mostly advertisements but there are two columns of interesting information that talk about local affairs such as what locations have been chosen to serve as hospitals, how the Hanover women are nursing the wounded, cannonading nearby, and captured Rebel soldiers.
Each page measures 22 inches by 17.25 inches. Both have the normal wear and tear you’d expect from a newspaper. The front page has water stains on the bottom right and some minor tears and flaking to the edges throughout. One fold line through the center has worn through and there are three holes along that fold line. Minor wrinkling and folding is present on this page. Some toning and minor staining throughout.
Page two exhibits similar wear to the first page but it is in a bit better condition. The edges show some minor tears and flaking of the edges. There are no holes or tears along the center fold line. A couple minor wrinkles and folds but nothing that detracts. There is one water stain on the bottom center of the page. Some minor staining throughout. [cla][ph:L]
