About 200 Union veterans attended the 1883 Reunion Encampment at Gettysburg, held at “Camp Geary”. "Camp Geary" at Gettysburg refers to both a post-Civil War gathering spot for veterans on East Cemetery Hill, and the area where Union General John W. Geary's "White Star" Division fought heroically on Culp's Hill, especially during the desperate July 3, 1863, fighting, with monuments marking key spots like the 147th Pennsylvania Infantry on Geary Avenue. It also relates to the later U.S. Army training camp established in 1895, which closed in 1917.
This badge features a GAR Type V brooch, suspending a drop medallion. One side features a relief of General Reynolds, along with the text “SEMI ANNUAL ENCAMPMENT DEPT. OF PA. G.A.R. GETTYSBURG 1883.” The brooch is complete with areas of light oxidation, and the medallion shows light surface scratching on each side. Dimensions are 1.5” x 2.4”.
A scarce remnant of post-battle memorialization for the Gettysburg or Grand Army of the Republic enthusiast. [cm][ph:L]
