An early photograph of the Soldiers National Monument in the center of the National Cemetery here in town, bearing a Tipton back mark in red and a period black ink inscription indicating it was purchased by a customer in July 1873, the tenth anniversary of the battle.

The monument features a standing figure of Liberty with sword and victory wreath in hand at the top of the central column and four buttresses around the base with seated figures representing War, History, Peace, and Plenty in an allegorical representation of peace and plenty following victory in a historic struggle by the forces of liberty. It also bears 18 stars for the Union states whose soldier dead are buried in the cemetery. Appropriations for the monument were first made in May 1865 with a cornerstone laid soon after, and the monument, still incomplete, dedicated in 1869.

Born in Gettysburg in 1850, William H. Tipton learned photography as a member of the Tyson brothers’s studio at least as early as 1863 and actually appears seated in their photographic wagon in an outdoor Gettysburg view probably taken in 1863 according to Frassanito. He managed the business from 1866 to 1868 when he purchased it with R.A. Myers after the Tyson brothers dissolved their partnership and operated it as Tipton & Myers until Myers’s interest was bought out by C.J. Tyson in 1873, with Tipton running it as W.H. Tipton & Co. until 1883, when he bought out Tyson and ran it as simply “W.H. Tipton” from then until his death in 1929.

This is very nice, early view, in excellent condition, made when carte-de-visite format photographs were still popular for albums at home, before larger format cabinet cards, etc.  [sr][ph:L]
