This desk set or relic display actually uses for its base a piece of wood from the battlefield with a bullet embedded in it. To this was added a bayonet socket with partial shank, set upright, and two other bullets from the battlefield. The wood base was cut in a rectangle and is labeled in old ink, “Gettysburg July 1863.” A couple of lighter color rectangles on the top and back of the base indicate it may once have a two small paper labels as well. The base measures 4-1/2” X 2” X 1-1/4.” The two bullets can move around the nails holding them, but are securely in place.

These small relic displays were very popular as desk sets or shelf displays among visiting tourists and returning veterans. This one is characteristic of John Good who made and sold  these here in Gettysburg from about 1895 to 1915.
