Gettysburg Pennsylvania Day September 11-12 1889 two-piece medal.  The top says “Gettysburg” while the drop says “Pennsylvania Day September 11 & 12 1889”.  It has been engraved “Gen. J. P. S. Gobin” in fancy script on back.  Gobin, a Brevet Brigadier-General; Colonel 47th Penna Infantry, spoke to transfer the monuments to the Governor of Pennsylvania.  Gobin was a member of the PA Senate at the time before becoming Lieutenant Governor in 1899.  Pennsylvania Day was a festival at Gettysburg that celebrated the dedication of memorials (approx 53) to the Pennsylvania units that fought in the Civil War.  A number of different medals were issued to mark the event.  This style in silver is extremely hard to find (most were a bronze tone).  Silver was most likely reserved for dignitaries attending the event.  [dm] [ph:L]
