This striking image was taken by famed Gettysburg photographer, William Tipton.  It shows a full view of the Wells monument and the 1894-1895 iteration of South Confederate Avenue. The photograph is clear and in excellent condition.  A gray mounting card features a Tipton commercial embossment at low right.  Corner loss is noted at low left with minor wear to the other corners and a very slight stain at the top edge. Reverse is blank with two adhesive labels at center as shown.  Dimensions are 11” x 14”.

The monument to William Wells was dedicated in 1913 and also honors the 1st Vermont Cavalry Regiment in which Wells was a Major.  The bronze statue of William Wells was created by J. Otto Schweitzer, one of seven statues by the Swiss-born sculptor on the Gettysburg battlefield. Sweitzer used Well’s actual clothing, boots, belt, and revolver as a model. The statue was so well received that friends ordered an exact copy which stands in Battery Park in Burlington, Vermont, Wells’s home town.  At the Battle of Gettysburg Wells led a battalion of the 1st Vermont Cavalry during Farnsworth’s Charge on July 3rd (depicted on the bronze tablet below the statue). Wells would go on to become Colonel of the regiment and then a Brevet Major General by the end of the war.  Wells was awarded the Medal of Honor for his gallant leadership on July 3rd.

William H. Tipton (1850–1929) was an exceptionally prolific Civil War era photographer and entrepreneur best known for extensively documenting the Gettysburg battlefield. Born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, he began learning his craft as a young teenager and went on to capture over 5,000 battlefield views and more than 100,000 portraits. His work serves as an invaluable visual record of how the landscape of Gettysburg transitioned from a site of active war to a place of national commemoration.
