Offered is a Mumper and Company cabinet card photograph of the 32nd Massachusetts Infantry monument and surrounding landscape. Formally dedicated on October 8, 1895 by the State of Massachusetts, the monument sits quietly on Sickles Avenue at the "Loop" on Stony Hill, positioned just west of the famous Wheatfield.  The landscape plainly visible in the background remains in a state similar to its July 1863 appearance.

The image is mounted to a branded card with minor edge rolling and slight corner wear noted in some areas. The reverse features Mumper’s 29 Baltimore Street address and an engraved-style collage commercial logo.  Surface is clean, save for two, small pieces of remaining tape and a spot of layer loss from removed tape (spots are above and below the reverse logo and shown in our attached photos). Written in period ink at top left is “On the Loop”. Dimensions are 5.3” x 8.5”.

The Mumper Photo Company (primarily known historically as Mumper & Co. or L. Mumper & Co.) was one of the most prominent historic photographic firms specializing in capturing the Gettysburg Battlefield and its visitors during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The company operated in Gettysburg from 1864 until its final closure in 1948. Levi Mumper, a veteran of the 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, settled in Gettysburg after his service. He learned photography from local artists Charles and Isaac Tyson and went professional by purchasing Samuel Weaver's studio on West Middle Street.  [cm][ph:L]
