This familiar image (Negative Catalogue Number 2397) was taken by Matthew Brady and shows the extensive damage done by the protracted fighting on Culp’s Hill.

The dual photograph is mounted to an orange card, with text on either side reading “THE WAR FOR THE UNION. / PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY.”  The reverse features one of E. & H. T. Anthony’s commercial labels from their wartime “War Views” series.  It also erroneously lists Culp’s Hill as the “left wing” instead of the right and misspells “Gettysburgh”.

The image itself is undamaged, while the card shows mild wear along the edges and corners. The reverse displays some discoloration but remains otherwise clean.  Dimensions are 3.5” x 7”.

The Anthonys provided financial support to Mathew Brady to photograph the Civil War and in return Brady gave them all of his duplicate negatives, which they published under his name in 1865.
