This wholly uncommon image features the interior of Linnean Hall, a since-demolished historic building of the Gettysburg College campus. The photo is mounted to a pale-yellow card with Tipton commercial writing on either side of the front face. The reverse is blank with slight darkening from the adhesive used to secure the stereoscopic image.  Dimensions are 4” x 7”.

Linnean Hall (also spelled Linnaean Hall) was a historic 1846 building at Gettysburg College built by student members of the Linnaean Association. It served as a science building, a Civil War hospital, and a campus gymnasium before it was torn down in 1942.  It was designed by Herman Haupt, famed Engineer and Union Colonel, then a faculty member of Pennsylvania/Gettysburg College.

William Henry Tipton (1850–1929) was a visionary entrepreneur and one of America’s most famous landscape and portrait photographers, best known for capturing the changing landscape of the Gettysburg Battlefield. Living in Gettysburg during the historic July 1863 battle, Tipton began his career as a young apprentice and grew to document the decades of veteran reunions, monument installations, and changing terrain that followed the Civil War. His massive collection of over 5,000 battlefield images serves as a foundational resource for modern historians and Gettysburg students.
