Offered here is a War Department Form No. 27, "List of Quartermaster's Stores, &c.," documenting thirty-nine worn-out cavalry horses turned in by the 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry at Frederick, Maryland, on July 11, 1863, barely a week after the close of the Battle of Gettysburg, as the Army of the Potomac pursued Lee's retreating army toward the Potomac.
The document records stores turned over by Lieut. G. H. Baker, Acting Quartermaster of the 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry, to Capt. Pitkin, Assistant Quartermaster, at Frederick. The single-entry lists thirty-nine horses, with their condition plainly noted as "Unserviceable." The certification at the foot of the form is signed by Baker as 1st Lieutenant, 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry.
The hard riding of the Gettysburg Campaign broke down cavalry mounts at an alarming rate, and regiments turned in their used-up horses at Frederick by the dozens while fresh remounts were rushed forward by rail. Thirty-nine unserviceable horses from a single regiment speaks volumes about what the campaign demanded of the Union cavalry and their animals. A genuine cavalry regiment document like this is a natural fit for the horse soldier collector.
The reverse is docketed "No. 95, Abstract E, July Qr. 1863, List of Stores Received from Lt. G. H. Baker, Quartermaster U.S. Army, at Frederick, Md."
Condition: Folio sheet with original fold lines and light toning along the folds. Minor spotting and edge wear. Clean and fully legible throughout. A great Pennsylvania cavalry document from the Gettysburg Campaign. [cm][ph:L]
