A rare pre-war pattern of the 1852 naval officer's sword. Presented to: “Lt. Jas. H. Moore / U.S.N. /from his friend / Richd. W. Tyson / Feb. 12, 1857.”

Manufactured: Philadelphia, PA;  Maker: W.H. Horstmann & Sons;  Year: 1857;  Model: M1852, small pattern; Size: 27.25 inch blade, .92 wide, .31 thick;  Condition: VG.

Small size Navy officer’s sword by Horstmann. A reduced size, regulation style guard and a smaller grip. The blade is considerable narrower and shorter with full etching in the Horstmann style There is a 19 inch wide fuller and a 16.75 inch secondary fuller. The spine of the blade is decorated and has Iron Proof. The obverse ricasso is blank with W.H. Horstmann / & Sons / Philadelphia etched just above. There is foliate, an anchor with federal shield, a ring of stars, a stand of arms with a U.S.N. pennant. The reverse ricasso has the Weyersberg kings head stamp, the eagle on a naval cannon, a fouled anchor, a ribbon with U.S.N., and sailors knot with acorns and oak leaves along the rope. The scabbard is also reduced size with a back seam and plain brass mounts. The presentation is inscribed on the top mount. The grip is shark skin with dragoon twist wire and two single strands.

James H. Moore was made Midshipman on Feb. 10, 1838; Passed Midshipman May 20, 1844. Master April 5, 1852, Lieutenant Jan. 7, 1853. He died Oct. 18, 1860 at Lima, PA.  [ph:L]
