The full title of this volume is “THE PRINCEPLES AND PRACTICE OF MODERN SURGERY – A NEW AMERICAN FROM THE LAST AND IMPROVED LONDON EDITION” by Robert Druitt, fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and edited by F. W. Sargent, M.D. Illustrated with one hundred and ninety-three wood engravings. Published by Blanchard and Lea of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1856.

Volume is leather bound with the covers showing some light staining and spotting and light edge wear from age, storage, and use. Title is stamped in gold on a black square on the spine.

Binding is excellent. The first few pages show moderate staining and light foxing. All pages show slight edge yellowing from age but are otherwise clean. First few pages show minor edge chips.

The book meas.5.75 x 9.25 inches and runs 576 pages with a 32 page listing at rear of other titles available from this publisher.

The first blank page has several markings. Ink stamped at top is “J. G. PINNIX’ below that is a circular Postal stamp that reads “STONY CREEK N.C. JUL 21.” And below that in pencil is “G. T. PINNIX STONY CREEK, NC” followed at bottom with “STONNCREEK, NC” in a childlike scrawl. The second blank page is marked in pencil “MR. G. T. PINNIX.” The blank page at the back of the book has the doctor’s name again “DR. J. G. PINNIX.” And, lastly, written in pencil on the top page edges is “G. T. PINNIX.”

J. G. Pinnix is the original owner of the book and he is Dr. Jackson Graves Pinnix who was born in Caswell County, North Carolina on November 28, 1831. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1852 and practiced medicine in Montgomery County, North Carolina. There is no record of him having served in the Confederate Army but he did sell several wagons to the Confederate Army in late 1863 and again in 1864. Dr. Pinnix died on February 10, 1893 and is buried in Union Ridge Church Cemetery in Burlington, Alamance County, North Carolina.

A search of who G. T. Pinnix is yielded no results. He is either the son or nephew of the doctor.  [ad][ph:L]
