This small but extraordinary object, a "loupe" was once owned by General Thomas Lafayette Rosser, the larger-than-life Virginia Confederate patriot. Please click on this link (Thomas Lafayette Rosser | American Battlefield Trust). Made by Franz Kroedel this sterling silver object is larger than the typically seen jeweler's loupe and was therefore designed more as a pocket magnifying glass. Kroedel was born in Germany in 1834 and died in St. Mary's Hospital in Hoboken, New Jersey on December 29, 1907. He is listed in the New York City directories from 1860 to 1907 as a mathematical instrument maker and as a maker of surveying instruments. The rather substantial but small pocket magnifying glass measures 2 1/2 inches in length and is 3/4 of an inch wide and is made in 2 sections. Swiveling or pivoting out are 2 hand ground glass or crystal magnifying lenses. One surface of the loupe is engraved in upright letters " F. Kroedel. N.Y." while the other surface is beautifully engraved in script "T. L. Rosser". The compiler recalls seeing this item among Mr. Turner's prized objects of virtue back in the mid 1980s! Very historic and interesting. [pe] [ph:L]
