The men of the Pennsylvania Reserves Division were among the most respected and effective troops in the Army of the Potomac, seeing service through some of the most arduous combat in the Eastern Theater of the Civil War.
This identification disc was given to Patrick to commemorate his service at its end in June, 1864. A pin brooch in the form of a spread-winged Federal eagle retains the original pin with light tarnish and suspends the disc, which reads, “2nd REGT. P.V.R.C. / JUNE 1864”. The reverse of the drop disc reads “HONOR TO THE BRAVE / PRESENTED BY THE CITIZENS OF PHILADA. / Capt. Smith”. The piece measures 1.6” x 2” overall.
Patrick Smith enlisted as a 25-year-old Captain on 5/27/1861 and commissioned that same day into Company K of the 31st Pennsylvania, also known as the 2nd Reserves. He was wounded and taken prisoner at White Oak Swamp in 1862, but was quickly exchanged for a captured Confederate from the 31st North Carolina. He was next wounded slightly at Fredericksburg, and again at The Wilderness. Captain Smith mustered out with the regiment on June 16, 1864 at Philadelphia and was breveted at Major of Volunteers on 3/13/1865 – for meritorious service at the Wilderness.
A true link to the enduring Pennsylvania Reserves and a prime piece for the collector of identified Civil War items. [cm][ph:L]
