Laban Lemert enlisted on 10/22/1863 as a Private in Company A of the 76th Ohio Infantry. He mustered out on 9/19/1864 and was commissioned into Company H, 51st United States Colored Troops as a 2nd Lieutenant. He transferred later to Company E, and then to Company G. He mustered out on 6/16/1866, lived until 1910, and was survived by his wife, Eliza. The 51st United States Colored Troops was formed in Mississippi and served across the deeper south from Louisiana to Texas.

Laban’s Algebra book is a copy of Ray’s Algebra, Volume 1 – Analytic and Inductive Methods of Instruction. “Ray” was a professor of mathematics from the 1840’s and this revised edition dates to 1864/65 (though this copy is undated like most).  An inscription written on the first fly leaf reads “Laban Lemert 2nd Lt. / 51st U.S.C. Infantry / November 17th 1865”.  At the bottom left is a heavy ink stamp bearing his name, and a second stamp is noted on the second fly leaf. The fly leaf page bearing his signature is loose, and the ink has eaten through the paper where it was most concentrated (but remains intact and very legible). His writing also bled onto the second page, where it is partially legible. Scattered foxing and discoloration are observed on most pages, with the highest concentration on the front and rear fly leaf pages. The cover is comprised of brown fabric over plain boards with a leather spine.  Some material loss to the leather is noted, primarily at the top and bottom edges. Wear is observed along the edges and corners, but the fabric remains intact and secure. The binding is tight, save for the aforementioned loose page. Pages number 1-240 and dimensions are 5” x 7.5”.

An unusual title, identified to an officer in a USCT regiment, makes this an exciting and personal piece for the collector. [cm][ph:L]
