This booklet, published by Perkinpine & Higgins of Philadelphia, was provided to US Soldiers as an accounting of all things being done by civilians and professionals to support them and the war effort – both at home and in the field.  It also provides useful tools such as a calendar, pay table, information regarding artificial limbs, and directories for hospitals, churches, and aid fairs.

The flyleaf is signed “Emma Miles” in oxidized, period ink.  The publisher of this example was a smaller outfit in Philadelphia in existence for nearly 50 years.  Operating on the assumption that this publisher was contracted to print them for regional distribution, only one Emma Miles matches the appropriate criteria.  She was married to William Henry Miles, a soldier who served in at least 3 different Pennsylvania regiments and possibly a Minnesota regiment – none for longer than a few months.  If this is the correct Emma, she died in 1914 and is buried in Union Hill Cemetery in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.

The book is in good condition considering age, purpose, and construction. Some paper discoloration is noted, but minimal wear is noted.  The book covers are joined by a cloth hinge in complete and sound condition with string binding.  A section of leaves are loose at one binding point from the “preface” page to page 15 (but are present and otherwise undamaged).  Dimensions are 2.9” x 4.3”.

An interesting and uncommon item meant to reassure the US soldier in our Civil War that he was supported and appreciated.  [cm][ph:L]
