Image shows Riggin in a dark single-breasted frock coat with cutout brigadier general’s stars on his shoulders.

Image has good clarity and contrast. Paper and mount are in very nice condition.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for BLACK & CASE…NEWPORT R.I. There is also a blue 2 cent internal revenue tax stamp.

ID is confirmed by two Xerox copies of identified images, one of which is in the MOLLUS collection at Carlisle Barracks.

John Riggin Jr. was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1835.

Riggin was appointed lieutenant colonel and aide-de-camp on December 23, 1861. He was promoted to colonel on May 3, 1862 and resigned October 14, 1863. Riggin later received a brevet promotion to brigadier general on March 13, 1865. While on General Grant’s staff Riggin distinguished himself at Fort Donelson and Vicksburg earning praise from Grant in his memoirs.

General Riggin died on June 13, 1886 and is buried in Manatee Burying Ground, Bradenton, Florida.  [ad] [ph:L]
