This image is one of several that were popular during the war showing white children who, because of their African-American blood and mixed racial heritage, had been held as slaves in New Orleans.
The three children were named Rebecca, Charley and Rosa. This image is a group shot of all three children. The mount is marked on the bottom “REBECCA, CHARLEY & ROSA-SLAVE CHILDREN FROM NEW ORLEANS.”
Contrast and clarity are good. Paper and mount have light surface dirt and is slightly toned.
The reverse has a photographer’s back mark for CHAS. PAXSON of NEW YORK with a printed note saying that the proceeds from the sales of this image will be devoted to the education of the Colored people in the Department of the Gulf under the command of Major General Banks. Also, on the reverse is printed “NO.4” showing that this was the 4th image in a series. [ad] [ph:L]
