These stamped brass rosettes show an eagle in relief with raised wings, holding a US shield and prominent olive branch, flourishing a narrow banner overhead that certainly signifies an E Pluribus Unum ribbon scroll, all within a circular beaded or roped border set on an octagon with the space between the inner border and outer edge finely crosshatched. These are slightly domed and fitted with large brass staples on the reverse so they can be fit over the leather straps of a horse’s headstall. As noted on an old display card still with them, the design likely dates to the 1840s or so and can be found used on the sidebuttons of leather helmets as well as horsegear. These would make nice addition to a display of military horsegear as used by militia and officers. The condition is very good, untouched, just showing some age darkening and spots. [sr][PH:L]
